Gilman International Scholarship to South Korea, 2021

BS Civil & Architectural Engineering '24, Honors

Elizabeth Le is pursuing a dual degree in civil and architectural engineering with hopes to gain experience in developing green infrastructure and technology in urban settings globally. However, Elizabeth is also interested in gaining experience in the many diverse areas under sustainable engineering. She jump-started this journey by studying the evapotranspiration rate of poplar trees in Green Stormwater Infrastructure during the 2020 STAR Scholars research program under the mentorship of Franco Montalto. Elizabeth also started to develop and build on professional career goals through the help of the 2020-2021 Aspire Scholars program. She gained valuable academic experience, increased Korean language fluency, and intercultural knowledge through studying abroad with the Gilman Scholarship at a global engineering institute, Hanyang University, during the 2021 spring term. Elizabeth returned that year to begin a co-op at the City of Philadelphia’s Parks and Recreation’s Capital Department, where she gained industry knowledge on the process of refurbishing and developing public spaces such as parks and recreation spaces.

For her Gilman Follow-on Service Project, Elizabeth wrote an article about studying abroad as an engineering major. Read it here: Consider Studying Abroad
